The emergence and growing acceptance of fitness-for-service methods has increasingly led to the safe delay or avoidance of costly repairs to aging equipment. The methodology has been developed by industry experts with a wide range of backgrounds and covers a multitude of damage mechanisms. These include corrosion, hydrogen damage, cracking, dents or shell distortion and creep damage, among others. Even if a plant is not API related, the API 579/ASME FFS-1 Fitness-for-Service standard is often recognized as the best engineering practice.
