How to Assess Pipeline Anomalies and Effectively Prioritise Pipeline-Integrity Digs
By: Ian Smith, Senior Consulting Engineer, Quest Integrity
As seen in the December 2014 issue of Pipelines International
Quest Integrity Group was recently contracted by the pipeline-integrity department of an offshore offloading facility to perform an ultrasonic in-line inspection of a 4 inch pipeline. By employing advanced engineering technology, the company was able to reduce the integrity department’s pipeline-integrity digs from 16 to three, saving time and money.
Effective Integrity Management Programs for Steam Reformers
By: Kelsey Hevner,Technical Advisor - Syngas at Quest Integrity Group
As seen in the Nov-Dec 2014 issue of Inspectioneering Journal
An effective integrity management program for steam reformers that focuses on tube integrity encompasses these essential parts: inspection, data analysis, and remaining life assessment.
Achieving a Comprehensive Fired Heater Health Monitoring Program
By: Tim Hill, Principal Consulting Engineer, Quest Integrity
As seen in the September/October 2014 edition of Inspectioneering Journal
IR thermometry is an excellent diagnostic tool for detecting tube hot spots from internal fouling or non-uniform heat distribution in fired heaters, but to ensure the full capability of IR thermometry, operators should employ the right instruments for the job and implement a proven methodology to measure accurate temperatures in a repeatable process.
Convection Section Failure Analysis and Fitness-for-Service Assessment for an Ammonia Plant
By: James R. Widrig, Quest Integrity Group and Neil Schroetlin, Dakota Gasification Company
As published by the 2014 AIChE Annual Safety in Ammonia Plants and Related Facilities Symposium
A brittle fracture failure of several HK-40 tubes occured in the convection section of an ammonia plant feed gas heater. A failure analysis and API 579 Fitness-for-Service assessment were performed to determine the mode of failure and to determine the remaining life of the HK-40 tubes. This information provided the operator with a sound basis to evaluate the business and safety risks of continued operation until long-term repairs and system improvements could be implemented.

Alleviating the Challenges of Type B Inspections
By: Ron Kessler, RDVI Business Development North America
As seen in the July-August issue of Tank Storage Magazine
Historically, inspections for IFR Type B failures required a manned entry into the vessel. A confined space entry of this nature requires extensive planning and must be supported with product transfer, supplied air and an extensive lockout/tagout (LOTO) effort. However, a new solution utilizing remote digital video inspection (RDVI) techniques is now available for single seal tanks to alleviate the challenges associated with IFR Type B inspections.

Improving Reformer Pigtail Reliability
By: Nitrogen + Syngas with contributions from Quest Integrity's Charles Thomas and Matt Smillie
As seen in the July-August 2014 issue of Nitrogen + Syngas
Previously reformer outlet pigtails were considered standalone components with a nominal 100,000 hour lifespan. With improvements in reformer tube metallurgy and manufacture, pigtails are now seen as a weak link and often require replacement before the reformer tubes and manifolds. There is a strong incentive to improve pigtail reliability and lifespan, taking into account all the key factors, from design to material selection, metallurgy, grain size distribution, quality control or inspection techniques, and all the major focal points during the life cycle of these components.

Heater Tube Inspection and Remnant Life Evaluation
By: Rich Roberts, Vice President and General Manager, Quest Integrity Group
As seen in the May/June 2014 issue of Inspectioneering Journal
Understanding the uncertainties associated with heater tube remaining life analysis is critical to the quality and accuracy of your predictions. The following interview with Rich Roberts provides answers to some of the questions our readers have about small, specially designed pigs carrying NDE technologies that can inspect nearly every area of a tube from the ID.
Problem Solving in the North Sea
By: Stefan Papenfuss, Vice President, Pipeline Resources
As seen in the August 2014 issue of World Pipelines Magazine
This is a case study of a challenging offshore pipeline inspection project in The Netherlands that was successfully completed in one run, despite extreme low-flow conditions and a vertical launch on the platform deck.
Critical Spares - Who Needs Them and When?
By: Stephen Rowbotham, Quest Integrity NZL Ltd.
As seen in the Jan-March 2014 issue of Energy Generation Magazine
Critical part assessment is an integral part of a facilities equipment integrity management system. As a plant ages and personnel changes, the existence of critical spares can become a mystery, especially if systems and policies are not in place to monitor and maintain the parts.
