Case Study: Computing Critical Flaw Sizes for a
                      Butane Sphere

During a recent out of service inspection of a spherical butane storage tank, multiple cracks were identified near the seam welds. The cracks were surface breaking on the ID.  As a screening tool to determine the acceptability of the existing cracks, Signal FFS was used to determine a critical flaw size curve. The existing flaws were then plotted against the critical flaw size curve. It was determined that none of the existing flaws were found to be above the critical size after a margin of safety was determined by the owner. The sphere was returned to service with an adjusted inspection interval to monitor the existing flaws.
