Tank Settlement: Assessing Impact to Nozzles and Pipework Integrity
Edge settlement is a structural risk to above-ground storage tanks and particularly raising concerns about the annular plate to shell connection. However, the impact of edge settlement on other components, such as tank nozzles and adjacent pipework, is often overlooked. This presentation shares a storage tank case study that suffered significant edge settlement, exceeding the limits defined in API 653. The study focuses on assessing the structural integrity of an inlet nozzle with the adjacent pipework under these settlement conditions.

Leveraging Crack ILI Data to Optimize Decisions Through Advanced Models
As ultrasonic crack detection (UTCD) inline inspection technology improves, pipeline operators receive more detailed data on crack-like anomalies, but traditional deterministic fracture mechanics methods can be overly conservative and lead to unnecessary excavations. In this case study, Quest Integrity and Colonial Pipeline used high-resolution UTCD data, advanced 3D finite element analysis (FEA), and probabilistic Monte Carlo analysis to more accurately assess crack severity and failure risk. This data-driven approach improved the balance between safety and realism, enabling more reliable pipeline integrity management while reducing unnecessary repairs.

Infrared (IR) thermography is widely used to monitor tube metal temperatures in fired heaters and reformers; however it is highly dependent on the performance of the IR equipment itself. This presentation examines key instrument-related sources of error—including Size-of-Source Effect (SSE) and camera calibration—and explains why relying solely on manufacturer calibration may be insufficient for field applications. It demonstrates how optical physics models and laboratory generated correction curves based on Black Body cavities can be applied to reduce systematic measurement errors and improve the accuracy of field temperature measurements.
