Distinguishing General Metal Loss from Local Metal Loss

Sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish "General Metal Loss” from "Local Metal Loss”. "General Metal Loss” corrosion is considered to be widespread and relatively uniform, occurring across a large area of the component. "Local Metal Loss” corrosion is considered to be contained to a more finite area. In general, localized corrosion would be described as a local thin area (length and width of the area are the same order of magnitude), groove or gouge (the length of the area is significantly longer than the width) or a pit (the length and width of the area are on the same order of magnitude as the component thickness).
